Tale Five

This is a detail of a fire insurance map of Belleville from 1888, produced by Charles E. Goad. The colours represent different building materials: pink for brick, blue for stone, and yellow or grey for wood.

Patches were pasted on to these maps to update information as buildings changed over time. This map shows the addition of two Chinese laundries by 1900. The one on the East side of Front Street was run by Sing Li and his nephew, Fi Li.  The one on the West side was run by Charlie Lang. Both Sing Li and Charlie Lang came to Canada in 1892.
