Grandstand and horses at the Belleville Exhibition.

The Demolition Derby has long been a feature of the Quinte Exhibition held in Belleville on the Labour Day weekend. This early photograph from William James Topley of Ottawa shows onlookers gathering round to watch the first such event, which was held in 1913, just as motor vehicles started to become popular.

The team of horses in the foreground belonged to Jacob Maracle (1878-1952) of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, a regular winner of the carriage racing event which was another of the highlights of the Exhibition.
